Homework is your responsibility and I take it seriously. I will not give you much, but I will give it regularly and I expect you to do it. If it is ever too difficult or you do not understand something, you may email me at night and I may be able to answer your question or you can ask me the next day. I believe homework is an excellent way for you to practice and reinforce what we learned in class that day. I see homework as an extension of our classroom and an excellent opportunity to bridge school with home. Please ask your child about the school day and be a part of the homework time if only to see what the homework is.
Parents,
My wish is for students to be able to complete homework independently as much as possible. I would appreciate guidance and support be provided as needed. If your child does not understand any homework assignment, please just send in a quick note. I will work with your child and check for understanding of a concept during classtime the next day, or before or after school when necesasry and scheduled ahead of time.
WEEKLY HOMEWORK - Please read through this
6th Grade Reading and Writing
Vocabulary/Spelling - THIS IS PENDING UNTIL I HEAR NEWS ABOUT OUR SPELLING PROGRAM. The Vocabulary program will be in place
Spelling and Sadlier Vocabulary will be taught on a 3-week rotating schedule: 1 week of spelling of some kind- might be Greek and Latin roots and 2 weeks of vocabulary.
*6th gr SADLIER vocabulary is a little more difficult because there ar 20 words, but this is why we spend 2 weeks on each list.
Spelling-classwork- 1 week
I will give you the spelling list of 20 words on Monday. We will go over the words and discuss meanings and pronunciation for clarification. We will have a pre-test. Incorrect words will be written 3 x each for homework. If you get 100% on the pretest you DO NOT need to take the test, but you DO need to do sentences for homework.
All homework is due by Friday but may certainly be handed in or checked anytime. The following is a recommendation pacing of your spelling homework. You will write the assignments in your planner or although your journal is not due until Friday. You may decide to skip a night of doing homework, but it will be your responsibility to catch up and complete all assignments by Friday. Use each word AT LEAST ONCE. You may change the endings and tense of the word. Apply editing rules: COPS Write creative sentences- at least 7-10 words in each sentence
Monday: Three times each of all incorrectly spelled words. 5 sentences
Tuesday: 5 more sentences
Wednesday: 5 more sentences
Thursday: last 5 sentences and study for test
Friday: Hand in spelling journal- take test
Vocabulary- class and homework- 2 weeks
Monday- The list of 20 words will be distributed and your child will be given time to make flashcards in class to study from over the next two weeks. Bring them back and forth to class each day as we will have time during DO NOW time to study. Any flashcards not finished in class will be homework
Tuesday -Thursday- teacher directed work. Class and homework assignments may vary Ex: online or paper copies of online assignments, sentences, kahoot, etc…
Friday of the second week- test
Reading:
We will be reading novels in our class and will do most of the work related to the novels during classtime. There may be days when comprehension questions will be assigned for homework. You are responsible to read for pleasure ~preferably 20 minutes/day but I'd rather we begin to establish good pleasure reading habits and you read what you like frequently when you think of it instead of being told to do so. We will work on this. Perhaps I will give you things to read once I know what's on your reading menu.
Writing:
Most of the work will be completed in class during Writer's Workshop. You will have plenty of other homework in your core subjects which may require writing. There may be times I assign work related to mini-lessons, i.e.grammar skills- which would be in the form of a worksheet. I may assign current events, writing prompts or language skill/grammar practice from time to time throughout the year.
Math
I will give math homework roughly 3-4 /wk- sometimes more, sometimes less. I may not give it every night so not to overload you. Students will complete a worksheet as practice of that day's lesson .
*Remember... If at any time a homework assignment is too difficult, STOP! Take a break. Try again. If you are still having trouble, put it away and we will talk about it in class the next day. I am available for extra help. Just let me know and I will meet you in the morning before school. You can try to email me, but I cannot guarantee I will see the email at night. Do not worry!
